Children’s Dentist Sandgate

Children’s dentistry at Sandgate Family Dental is provided by our dentists Dr Nina Stallman and Dr Nima Kancherla, for families across Sandgate and the north Brisbane bayside.
Finding a children’s dentist your child feels comfortable with can make all the difference. At Sandgate Family Dental, we take a calm, patient approach to dental care for kids of all ages — from their very first visit through to their teenage years. Whether it’s a routine check-up, a question about their development, or an urgent concern, our Sandgate dental team is here to help your family.
We understand that parents often have questions about when to start dental visits, what to expect, and how to make the experience positive for their child. This page covers what we offer, how we approach children’s dental care, and how families may be able to access bulk billed dental through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).
Children's Dentist in Sandgate — Your Child's Oral Health Matters
Children’s teeth play an important role well before adult teeth come through. Baby teeth help with speech development, chewing, and guide permanent teeth into their correct positions. When dental concerns are identified early, they are generally simpler to manage and less likely to cause discomfort later on.
As a family dental practice in Sandgate, we see children at every stage — from toddlers visiting the dentist for the first time, through to teenagers needing wisdom teeth assessments. Our approach is to make each visit straightforward, age-appropriate, and as comfortable as possible for both children and parents.
The Australian Dental Association recommends that children have their first dental visit by their first birthday, or when their first teeth appear. Regular visits from an early age help children become familiar with the dental environment and can support the development of good oral hygiene habits over time.
Why Early Dental Care Matters for Children
Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions in Australia. Early and regular dental visits can help identify potential issues — such as decay, bite concerns, or developmental questions — before they become more complex.
Routine dental check-ups and cleans for children typically include an examination of teeth and gums, a gentle clean where appropriate, and guidance for parents on brushing, diet, and oral care at home. These visits also give parents the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns in a relaxed setting.
Starting dental visits early isn’t about finding problems — it’s about helping children build a positive relationship with dental care that can benefit them throughout their life.
Children's Dental Services We Offer
At Sandgate Family Dental, we provide a range of dental services for children, including:
- Check-ups and cleans — Regular examinations to monitor growth, check for decay, and keep teeth and gums healthy. We tailor each visit to your child’s age and stage of development.
- Fissure sealants — A protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars), where grooves can trap food and bacteria. Sealants are a straightforward preventive measure that may help reduce the risk of decay in these areas.
- Fluoride treatments — Topical fluoride can help strengthen developing enamel. We may recommend fluoride treatments based on your child’s individual needs and risk factors.
- Fillings — If decay is found, we use tooth-coloured fillings to restore the tooth. We explain each step to your child in language they can understand, and take the time needed to keep them comfortable during the process.
- Mouthguards — Custom-fitted sports mouthguards provide more reliable protection than over-the-counter options. We recommend mouthguards for children involved in contact sports or activities with a risk of dental injury.
- Emergency dental care — Accidents involving teeth can happen at any age. If your child has a knocked-out tooth, a broken tooth, or dental pain, contact our team as soon as possible so we can arrange prompt care.
What to Expect at Your Child's Dental Visit
We know that visiting the dentist can feel unfamiliar for young children — and sometimes for parents too. Here’s a general overview of how a children’s dental appointment works at our Sandgate practice:
Before the appointment: You’re welcome to let your child know they’ll be visiting the dentist to have their teeth counted and cleaned. Keeping the language simple and positive can help set expectations. If your child has any particular anxieties or needs, please let us know when you book so we can prepare accordingly.
During the visit: Our team introduces themselves to your child and explains what will happen using age-appropriate language. For younger children, we often use a “show, tell, do” approach — showing them the tools, explaining what each one does, and then proceeding at a pace they’re comfortable with. Parents are welcome to stay in the treatment room throughout.
After the visit: We’ll discuss our findings with you, answer any questions, and provide guidance on caring for your child’s teeth at home. If any follow-up treatment is needed, we’ll explain the options clearly and without pressure.
Our aim is for each visit to be a calm, positive experience — one that helps your child feel more comfortable over time, rather than less.
Bulk Billed Children's Dental Care in Sandgate (CDBS)
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a federal government program administered through Medicare, providing eligible children aged 0–17 with up to $1,158 in dental benefits over two calendar years. Sandgate Family Dental is a registered CDBS provider, and where a child is eligible and the treatment falls within the schedule we bulk bill directly to Medicare — so there is no out-of-pocket cost for covered services.
Our reception team can help confirm your child’s eligibility when you book. For full details on what is covered, eligibility and how bulk billing works, see our bulk-billed children’s dentistry (CDBS) page.
Helping Children Feel Comfortable at the Dentist
Every child responds differently to visiting the dentist, and we adjust our approach accordingly. Some children are naturally curious and relaxed; others need more time, reassurance, and patience. Both are completely normal, and our team is experienced in working with children across that full range.
A few things that are part of our approach:
We go at your child’s pace. If they need a moment, we pause. There’s no rushing.
We use simple, non-clinical language with children. We explain things in a way that’s honest but not frightening.
Parents are always welcome in the treatment room. You know your child best, and your presence can make a real difference.
There’s no judgement here. Whether it’s been a while between visits or your child is anxious, we’re here to help — not to make anyone feel bad. Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where families feel comfortable asking questions and returning for ongoing care.
If your child has additional needs or requires extra support during dental visits, please let us know ahead of time. We’ll work with you to plan an appointment that suits them.
Frequently Asked Questions About Children's Dentistry
When should my child first visit the dentist? The Australian Dental Association recommends a child’s first dental visit by their first birthday, or when their first teeth start to come through. Early visits help your child become familiar with the dental environment and allow us to check that their teeth and gums are developing as expected.
How often should children have dental check-ups? For most children, a check-up every six months is a good guideline. However, the recommended frequency can vary depending on your child’s individual oral health. We’ll advise you on the right schedule for your child after their assessment.
Is my child eligible for bulk billed dental through the CDBS? Children aged 0–17 may be eligible if the family receives a relevant government payment such as Family Tax Benefit Part A. You can check eligibility via your myGov account, by calling Medicare on 132 011, or by asking our reception team when you book.
What if my child is nervous about visiting the dentist? This is very common, and we’re well-equipped to help. We use a gentle, step-by-step approach, explain everything in simple language, and move at your child’s pace. Parents are welcome to stay in the room throughout. Letting your child know what to expect beforehand in positive, simple terms can also help.
Do you offer mouthguards for children’s sport? Yes. We provide custom-fitted mouthguards for children involved in contact sports and activities. Custom mouthguards offer a more secure fit and more reliable protection compared to generic store-bought options.
What happens if my child has a dental emergency? If your child has knocked out a tooth, chipped a tooth, or is experiencing dental pain, contact us as soon as you can. We’ll arrange an appointment as quickly as possible. For a knocked-out adult (permanent) tooth, try to keep the tooth moist (in milk or gently held inside the cheek) and seek care within 30 minutes if possible.
