Why Regular Dental Check-Ups Matter
Even people with good brushing and flossing habits can develop issues that aren’t visible or noticeable in the early stages. Decay often begins between teeth or below the gumline, and gum disease can progress slowly without obvious symptoms. Regular dental check-ups allow your dentist to identify these kinds of concerns early — when they’re generally simpler and less costly to address.
A professional scale and clean also removes hardened plaque (tartar) that you can’t remove at home with a toothbrush, no matter how thorough your routine. Over time, tartar build-up can contribute to gum inflammation, bad breath and an increased risk of cavities.
For most people, a check-up and clean every six months is a good guideline, though your dentist may recommend more or less frequent visits depending on your individual oral health needs.
What's Included in a Check-Up and Clean?
When you visit Sandgate Family Dental for a check-up and clean, your appointment will typically include several components tailored to your needs.
Comprehensive Oral Examination
Your dentist will carefully assess the health of your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks and jaw. This includes checking for signs of decay, cracks, wear, and gum disease. If any areas need a closer look, we may recommend digital X-rays to see what is happening beneath the surface.
Your dental check-up also includes a visual check for any unusual changes to the soft tissues of your mouth — an important part of early detection. Learn more about oral cancer screening at Sandgate Family Dental.
Scale and Clean
Using professional instruments, your dentist or hygienist will remove plaque and tartar build-up from around your teeth and along the gumline. This process helps reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease and leaves your teeth feeling noticeably smoother and fresher.
For patients with signs of gum disease or significant tartar build-up, a more thorough professional scale and clean or periodontal maintenance may be recommended. Your dentist will advise if this is appropriate for you. If gum concerns are identified, we can also discuss gum disease treatment options.
Polish and Fluoride Treatment
After scaling, your teeth are polished to remove surface stains and create a smooth finish that makes it harder for plaque to adhere. A fluoride treatment may be applied to help strengthen your enamel and provide additional protection against decay.
Personalised Oral Health Advice
Your dentist will discuss any findings with you and offer practical advice on brushing technique, flossing, diet and any other factors relevant to your oral health. If further treatment is needed — such as a filling, a crown or a referral for wisdom teeth assessment — your dentist will explain your options clearly so you can make an informed decision.

Who Should Have Regular Check-Ups?
Dental check-ups and cleans are beneficial at every stage of life. The earlier good habits start, the better the long-term outcomes tend to be.
Children and Teens
Regular visits help monitor the development of your child’s teeth and catch potential concerns such as early decay or alignment issues. Our team takes a gentle, patient approach with younger visitors. We also support families accessing the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which provides eligible children aged 0–17 with up to $1,158 in dental benefits over a two-year period for services including check-ups, cleans, fillings, X-rays and more. If your child qualifies, their check-up and clean may be fully covered under CDBS — our team can check eligibility for you at your appointment. Learn more about our children’s dentistry services.
Adults
Busy schedules can make it easy to put off dental visits, but routine check-ups are one of the most effective ways to avoid more complex and costly treatment down the track. Whether it’s been six months or several years since your last visit, we provide a welcoming, judgement-free environment. If you’re new to our practice, ask about our new patient offer.
Seniors
As we age, our teeth and gums can become more susceptible to wear, decay and gum recession. Existing dental work such as crowns, bridges and dentures also needs regular monitoring to ensure it remains in good condition. Regular check-ups help maintain comfort, function and confidence at every age.
If you are visiting us for the first time, our what to expect at your check-up and clean guide walks you through what happens at your appointment step by step.

Signs You May Be Overdue for a Dental Visit
It’s common to delay dental visits when nothing seems wrong, but some signs suggest it’s time to book a check-up sooner rather than later. These can include bleeding gums when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks, visible plaque or tartar build-up, a chipped or cracked tooth, or jaw pain and headaches.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having things assessed. Many dental issues are easier to manage when identified early. If you’re experiencing pain or swelling that needs urgent attention, visit our emergency dental page for urgent care options.
How to Maintain Your Oral Health Between Visits
Your day-to-day habits play a significant role in keeping your teeth and gums healthy between professional cleans. Good oral hygiene at home includes brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes, cleaning between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, limiting sugary and acidic foods and drinks, drinking plenty of water throughout the day, and replacing your toothbrush every three months or when the bristles become frayed.
If you play contact sports, wearing a custom-fitted sports mouthguard can also help protect your teeth from injury. For patients who grind their teeth at night, a nightguard may be recommended to prevent wear and damage.
Your dentist can provide specific guidance based on your individual needs at each check-up.
Health Fund and Payment Options
We accept a wide range of health funds at our Sandgate clinic, and we process claims on the spot with HICAPS so you only pay the gap (if any) at the time of your visit. Check-ups and cleans are generally covered under the preventive or general dental component of most health fund extras policies. The amount you receive back depends on your level of cover and your fund’s fee schedule.
We are preferred providers or members of provider networks for several major funds, including HCF, nib, CBHS and HIF. Patients with these funds may receive higher rebates on their check-up and clean. Visit our health funds page for more details on the funds we work with.
Don’t have private health insurance? We also welcome patients who are members of smile.com.au, a dental discount plan that offers reduced fees on a range of treatments. Our team is happy to discuss costs upfront so there are no surprises — just ask when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Check-Ups and Cleans
How often should I have a dental check-up and clean? For most patients, every six months is a good guideline. However, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits if you have specific risk factors such as gum disease, a history of frequent cavities or certain medical conditions. At your appointment, your dentist will advise on the right schedule for you.
What does a check-up and clean cost? The cost of a dental check-up and clean can vary depending on what’s included in your appointment — for example, whether X-rays are taken or additional treatments are needed. If you have health insurance, a portion of the fee is generally covered under your extras policy. Our team can provide a cost estimate when you book and will always discuss fees before proceeding with any treatment.
Are dental check-ups covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule? Yes. Check-ups, cleans, X-rays and several other preventive and general treatments are covered under the CDBS for eligible children aged 0–17. If your child qualifies, there may be no out-of-pocket cost for their check-up and clean. Our team can check eligibility at your appointment.
What happens if my dentist finds a problem during the check-up? If your dentist identifies any concerns — such as a cavity, early gum disease, or a cracked tooth — they’ll explain the findings clearly and discuss your treatment options. You’ll always have the opportunity to ask questions and make an informed decision before any treatment begins. Common follow-up treatments may include fillings, root canal therapy or a referral for further assessment.
I haven’t been to the dentist in years — is that okay? Absolutely. We see many patients who haven’t visited a dentist for some time, and our team provides a welcoming, non-judgemental environment. Your first visit back will typically include a thorough examination and clean, and your dentist will work with you to create a plan to get your oral health back on track. If you’re a new patient, you may like to check out our new patient offer.
Do you offer Saturday appointments for check-ups? Yes — we are open Saturday mornings, 8:00AM to 12:00PM, as well as Monday to Friday. Saturday check-up times are popular, so it is worth booking ahead.
