How teeth whitening works
- Your dentist assesses your teeth and the type of staining, and talks through what’s achievable.
- Together you choose in-chair whitening, a take-home kit, or both. Treatment fees are explained before treatment starts.
- In-chair: your dentist applies whitening gel in several cycles during one appointment.
- Take-home: your dentist takes impressions to make custom trays. You then use the gel at home as directed.
If your teeth have become stained or discoloured over time, professional teeth whitening is a safe, effective way to brighten your smile. At Sandgate Family Dental, we offer both in-chair whitening and take-home whitening kits, so you can choose the option that suits your lifestyle, goals and budget. Unlike over-the-counter products, our whitening treatments are supervised by our experienced dental team and use professional-grade whitening agents for more predictable, longer-lasting results. Our clinic is located at 12 Lagoon St, Sandgate, and we welcome patients from across North Brisbane, including Shorncliffe, Brighton, Deagon, Bracken Ridge and surrounding suburbs.
What Causes Teeth to Become Stained or Discoloured?
Tooth discolouration happens gradually and can be caused by a number of factors. Understanding what’s behind the staining can help you decide on the right whitening approach and set realistic expectations for the results.
Extrinsic staining (surface stains) is caused by substances that come into contact with the outer enamel of your teeth. Common culprits include coffee, tea, red wine, cola and other dark-coloured drinks, foods with strong pigments such as berries, curry and tomato-based sauces, tobacco use (smoking or chewing), and certain mouthwashes (particularly those containing chlorhexidine).
Intrinsic discolouration (within the tooth) is caused by factors that affect the inner structure of the tooth. These can include natural ageing (enamel thins over time, revealing the yellowish dentine beneath), certain medications taken during childhood (such as tetracycline antibiotics), excessive fluoride exposure during tooth development, and trauma to a tooth that causes internal darkening.
Professional teeth whitening is most effective on extrinsic and age-related discolouration. Intrinsic staining may respond to whitening to some degree, but in some cases, alternative cosmetic options such as dental bonding or porcelain veneers may be more suitable. Your dentist will assess your teeth and advise on what’s achievable.
Our Teeth Whitening Options
At Sandgate Family Dental, we offer two professional whitening options. Your dentist will help you decide which approach is right for you based on the type and degree of staining, your sensitivity levels, and your preferred timeline.
In-Chair Whitening
In-chair whitening is performed at our Sandgate clinic and delivers visible results in a single appointment. Your dentist applies a professional-strength whitening gel to your teeth and activates it with a special light. The gel is applied in several cycles during the appointment, with each cycle gradually lightening the shade of your teeth. The entire process typically takes around 60 to 90 minutes.
In-chair whitening is a good option if you’d like noticeable results quickly — for example, before a special event, photos or an important occasion.
Take-Home Whitening Kits
For patients who prefer to whiten at their own pace, we provide custom take-home whitening kits. Your dentist takes impressions of your teeth to create custom-fitted whitening trays. You’re then given a supply of professional-grade whitening gel to use at home, applying the gel to your trays for a specified period each day (typically 30 minutes to a few hours, or overnight, depending on the product).
Take-home whitening usually takes one to two weeks to achieve the desired result and allows you to control the level of brightness gradually. The custom trays can be kept and reused with top-up gel for maintenance treatments in the future.
Combination Approach
Some patients benefit from a combination of both — an in-chair session for an initial boost, followed by take-home trays to maintain and extend the result. Your dentist can recommend the most appropriate approach for your situation.

Professional vs. Over-the-Counter Whitening
Whitening products are widely available in pharmacies, supermarkets and online — including strips, gels, toothpastes and LED kits. While these products are convenient and generally affordable, there are important differences between them and professional whitening.
Professional whitening treatments use higher-concentration whitening agents that are only available through a dentist. The treatment is customised to your teeth and supervised to manage sensitivity and ensure even results. Custom-fitted trays (for take-home kits) ensure the gel stays in contact with the teeth evenly, reducing the risk of gum irritation.
Over-the-counter products use lower concentrations of whitening agents, which means they may take longer to produce visible results — and the results may be more limited. Generic one-size-fits-all trays can lead to uneven whitening and increased risk of gel contacting the gums.
It’s also worth noting that whitening products — whether professional or over-the-counter — only work on natural tooth enamel. They won’t change the colour of dental fillings, crowns, bonding or veneers. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, your dentist can discuss the best approach to achieve a consistent result.
What to Expect During and After Whitening
During Treatment
Most patients experience little to no discomfort during in-chair whitening. You’ll sit comfortably in the dental chair while the whitening gel is applied. Some patients notice mild, temporary sensitivity during or immediately after the treatment — this is normal and usually subsides within a day or two.
Sensitivity
Tooth sensitivity is the most common side effect of professional whitening. It’s typically mild and temporary, lasting from a few hours to a couple of days after treatment. Using a sensitive-teeth toothpaste in the days before and after whitening can help manage this. Your dentist may also adjust the concentration or application time if you have a history of sensitivity.
Results
The degree of whitening achieved varies from person to person and depends on the type and severity of staining, the natural shade of your teeth, and the whitening method used. Your dentist will discuss realistic expectations at your consultation. It’s important to understand that whitening aims to lighten the current shade of your teeth — the result will look natural and refreshed rather than artificially white.
Maintaining Your Whitening Results
Professional whitening results aren’t permanent, but with good habits you can help them last longer.
Maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine — brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste and floss daily. Attend your regular dental check-ups and cleans, as professional cleans remove surface stains and help your teeth stay looking their freshest.
Try to limit your consumption of highly staining foods and drinks — or rinse your mouth with water after consuming them. If you smoke, reducing or stopping tobacco use will significantly help maintain whitening results.
If your teeth gradually begin to dull over time, a top-up treatment using your take-home trays and a fresh supply of whitening gel can restore the brightness without needing a full in-chair session. Your dentist can advise on the right maintenance schedule for you.
Who Is Teeth Whitening Suitable For?
Professional teeth whitening is suitable for most adults with healthy teeth and gums. However, it’s not appropriate for everyone, and a dental assessment before treatment ensures it’s the right option for you.
Whitening may not be recommended if you have active tooth decay, gum disease or other untreated dental conditions (these should be addressed first), if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have significant intrinsic staining that won’t respond to bleaching agents, or if you have extensive visible restorations on your front teeth (whitening won’t change the colour of crowns, fillings, bonding or veneers). Where discolouration can’t be lightened, a crown or veneer may be discussed instead.
For younger patients, whitening is generally only recommended once all permanent teeth have fully erupted and developed. Your dentist will assess your suitability at a consultation and discuss alternative options if whitening isn’t appropriate.
Health Fund and Payment Options
Teeth whitening is classified as a cosmetic procedure by most health funds and is generally not covered under extras policies. However, the check-up and clean that precedes whitening treatment may be covered under your preventive dental benefits.
At Sandgate Family Dental, we process health fund claims on the spot using HICAPS for any eligible components of your visit. We are preferred providers or members of provider networks for several major funds, including HCF, nib, CBHS and HIF. Visit our health funds page for more details.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening
How long does teeth whitening last? Results vary depending on your diet, oral hygiene and lifestyle habits. For most patients, professional whitening results last six months to two years or longer. Avoiding heavily staining foods and drinks, not smoking, and maintaining good oral hygiene all help extend the result. Top-up treatments using your take-home trays can refresh your smile as needed.
Does teeth whitening cause sensitivity? Some patients experience mild, temporary tooth sensitivity during or after whitening treatment. This usually resolves within a few days. Using a sensitive-teeth toothpaste before and after treatment can help. Your dentist can also adjust the whitening concentration or application time to minimise discomfort.
What’s the difference between in-chair and take-home whitening? In-chair whitening is done at our Sandgate clinic in a single appointment (around 60–90 minutes) and produces visible results straight away. Take-home whitening uses custom trays and professional gel that you apply at home over one to two weeks. Some patients combine both for an initial boost followed by gradual maintenance.
Will whitening work on crowns, fillings or veneers? No. Whitening only lightens natural tooth enamel — it won’t change the colour of crowns, fillings, bonding or veneers. If you have visible restorations, your dentist can discuss the best way to achieve a consistent, natural-looking result.
Is professional whitening safe? When performed by a qualified dentist, professional teeth whitening is considered safe. The whitening agents used are dental-grade and the treatment is supervised to manage concentration, application time and sensitivity. It’s important to have a dental assessment before whitening to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy.
Can I whiten my teeth if I have sensitive teeth? In many cases, yes. Your dentist can tailor the treatment to reduce the risk of sensitivity — for example, using a lower-concentration gel, shorter application times, or desensitising products. Discuss any sensitivity concerns at your consultation and your dentist will recommend an approach that suits you.
Worried about sensitivity?
Tell your dentist if your teeth are already sensitive. They may use a lower-strength gel or shorter application times. A sensitive-teeth toothpaste before and after whitening can also help. Whitening may not be recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Frequently asked questions about teeth whitening
How long does professional teeth whitening last?
Results typically last six to twelve months, depending on your diet and lifestyle. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking shorten the effect. Many patients top up with a take-home tray once or twice a year to maintain their result.
What’s the difference between in-chair and take-home whitening?
In-chair whitening uses a higher-strength gel applied by your dentist in a single visit, with results visible the same day. Take-home whitening uses a custom-fitted tray and a lower-concentration gel worn over one to two weeks at home. The end result is similar; in-chair is faster, take-home is more flexible.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Professional whitening supervised by a dentist is well-established and considered safe for most adults. Over-the-counter products use lower concentrations and varied delivery methods — they can work, but results are less predictable and the risk of gum irritation is higher.
Will whitening damage my enamel?
No. The active ingredients (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) at the concentrations used in professional whitening have been studied extensively and don’t damage enamel when used as directed.
Does whitening work on crowns, veneers, or fillings?
No. Whitening only affects natural tooth enamel — it doesn’t change the colour of crowns, veneers, dental bonding, or fillings. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, your dentist can discuss the right approach to achieve a consistent result.
How much does professional teeth whitening cost in Sandgate?
The cost depends on whether you choose in-chair, take-home, or a combination. We provide a clear quote at your consultation. Whitening is typically not covered by health funds as it’s a cosmetic procedure.
Can I whiten my teeth while pregnant or breastfeeding?
We generally recommend deferring whitening until after pregnancy and breastfeeding. There’s no specific evidence of harm, but as the safety hasn’t been formally established, it’s prudent to wait.
