Children’s Check-up and Clean in Sandgate
A regular check-up and clean is one of the simplest ways to help your child grow up with healthy teeth. At Sandgate Family Dental we keep these visits short, friendly, and age-appropriate. Each appointment is a chance to spot small things early, refresh brushing habits, and give your child a positive experience in the chair.
Most children settle into a six- or twelve-month review pattern from a young age. You can book online at a time that suits the school or kindy run.
Why regular check-ups matter for kids
Baby teeth and young adult teeth change quickly. Decay, crowding, and bite issues can develop within months and are usually much easier to manage when they are caught early. Regular visits help us:
- Track how teeth and jaws are developing
- Identify early decay before it becomes painful
- Reinforce good brushing and flossing habits
- Talk through diet, snacking, and drink choices
- Apply preventive treatments where appropriate
- Keep dental visits feeling normal and unintimidating
What happens at a children’s check-up
Children’s appointments are tailored to age and confidence level. A typical visit lasts about 20 to 30 minutes.
1. A friendly welcome
We greet your child by name, explain what is about to happen, and let them choose the flavour of polish where appropriate. For younger children, parents are welcome in the room throughout.
2. A gentle examination
The dentist counts and checks each tooth, looks at how the bite is coming together, and examines the gums and soft tissues. We use kid-friendly language — “sugar bugs”, “tooth count”, and “tooth shower” all help to put children at ease.
3. A clean and polish
We remove any soft plaque, give the teeth a gentle polish, and show your child what each tool does before using it. The “tell-show-do” approach helps anxious children feel in control.
4. Fluoride or sealants if needed
Where helpful, we apply a fluoride varnish to strengthen the enamel, or recommend fissure sealants on permanent back teeth as they come through.
5. A chat with you
We will share what we have seen, answer any questions, and confirm when to book the next visit. If anything needs follow-up, we will explain options calmly and without pressure.
Age-appropriate techniques
Children’s appointments look different at different ages.
Babies and toddlers (1–3 years)
Knee-to-knee examinations on a parent’s lap, plus a brief look and count. The visit is mostly about familiarity and giving you brushing advice.
Preschool and early primary (3–7 years)
A short ride in the chair, counting teeth, and a gentle polish if your child is comfortable. We start introducing the tools step by step.
Late primary (8–12 years)
A full check, clean, and polish. We discuss adult teeth coming through, brushing technique, and whether an early orthodontic assessment would be useful.
Teenagers
Closer to an adult check-up, with attention to braces hygiene, wisdom teeth screening, and sports protection where relevant. Our teen dentistry page has more.
Helping a nervous child
Some children are confident from the start; others need a few visits to settle in. Both are completely normal. A few things help:
- Use positive, simple language — “count your teeth”, not “see if anything is wrong”
- Avoid words like “needle”, “hurt”, or “drill”, even in reassurance
- Bring a comfort item
- Book a time when your child is rested and fed
- Praise effort, not bravery
If your child finds dental visits genuinely difficult, our children’s dental anxiety page covers more strategies.
What we cover with you between visits
The conversation with you is often the most useful part of the visit. We will talk through:
- Brushing twice a day with the right amount of fluoride toothpaste for your child’s age
- Flossing where back teeth touch
- Drinks — water is the friendliest; juice, cordial, and sports drinks need limits
- Snacks — frequency matters more than quantity for tooth health
- Habits like thumb sucking, dummy use, or mouth breathing if relevant
- Sport — see our junior sports mouthguards information
Who this appointment suits
- Children with all stages of teeth — from one tooth to a full set
- Families wanting a calm, ongoing dental home
- Children starting kindy or school
- Kids who have had a break from dental visits
- Teens transitioning to an adult-style check-up
Health funds, CDBS and payment
We are HICAPS providers, so where you have eligible dental cover we can claim your rebate at the practice on the day. The exact amount depends on your policy, your level of cover, and any annual limits — your fund can confirm before the visit.
Many children are eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which we bulk-bill at Sandgate. See our CDBS bulk-billed page for what is included and how to check eligibility.
Children’s check-up FAQs
How often should my child have a check-up?
Most children come in every six or twelve months, depending on their decay risk and how their teeth are developing.
Will my child need X-rays?
Not at every visit. X-rays are only taken when there is a clinical reason, and we always use the lowest exposure suitable for children.
What if my child is too shy to open their mouth?
That is normal. We will go slowly and do what is possible on the day. Even a short, settled visit is valuable.
Are the cleaning tools the same as for adults?
We use smaller, child-friendly versions and adjust pressure and speed. The aim is comfort first.
Do you use fluoride for kids?
Where appropriate, we apply a small amount of fluoride varnish to strengthen enamel. We will explain it first and check with you.
What if a problem is found?
We will explain what we have seen, talk through options calmly, and give you time to ask questions. There is no pressure to decide on the spot.
Can my child come in even if they only have a few teeth?
Absolutely — see our first dental visit page for what to expect.
