Dr Timothy Gibbs B.D.S (Syd)
Grad Dip Clin Dental (Adel)
Dr Timothy Gibbs brings 30 years of dental experience in caring for patients. He has worked mainly in private dental practice with experience in other areas of dentistry. Dr Gibbs graduated from Sydney University and undertook postgraduate studies at The University of Adelaide where he also taught. He held a position as a Senior Specialist Consultant at The Royal Adelaide Hospital. After moving to Brisbane, he was asked to teach at the University of Queensland and still maintains a lecturer position. While he has a special interest in jaw and jaw joint problems he tends to prefer working as a general dentist. He has a gentle manner providing the services of regular examinations, cleans and restorations. He is happy to undertake complicated procedures when required including crowns, root canal treatments, extractions, dentures, aesthetic dentistry and provide appliances for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). While at the University he spent time with specialised care for the older patient with research in keeping their treatment simple and helping them to keep their teeth longer. He also enjoys introducing children to dentistry in a non-stressful playful manner. He is continually involved in professional education. When he is not in the clinic he enjoys travelling, cooking and spending time with friends.
Pain and soreness in the muscles around the jaw, clicking, locking and pain in the jaw joint are just some of the symptoms of muscle and jaw joint problems called TemporoMandibular Disorders (TMD). TMD occurs in over 10% of the population and is more common with the older patient. Many forms of TMD do not cause problems, but when problems affect the patient’s health treatment is required. TMD consists of a number of different conditions, some involving the muscles, others involving the structures inside the joint and may include arthritis. These are different conditions and to have success in treatment they require different, appropriate forms of treatment.
Sore or tight muscles in the jaws or face either in the morning or during the day can be signs of several conditions, some related to stress or a non-harmonious tooth arrangement.
Clicking and locking of the jaw are an indicator that the disk inside the jaw joint is out of position and this needs to be reviewed to determine the most appropriate form of treatment and the long-term scenario.
Pain in the jaw joint may be from arthritis, (osteo, rheumatoid) or other conditions.
Tooth grinding during sleep is normal and is part of the sleep process. When it causes muscle, joint pain or high wear of the teeth the cause needs to be identified.
Before any treatment a proper examination is required. This may require the use of radiographs to picture or image the actual jaw joints as an aid to developing a diagnosis and treatment.
Different treatments are required for the different conditions and the treatments can range from the adjustment of the teeth, occlusal splints, medication and physiotherapy. Patient education of what is happening is important in how you can help look after the condition.
