What Is General Dentistry?
General dentistry is the branch of dental care focused on maintaining, protecting and restoring your everyday oral health. It covers the routine visits, early detection and straightforward treatments that most people need throughout their lives — from childhood through to older age.
A general dentist is typically your first point of contact for dental care. Rather than focusing on a single area of specialty, a general dentist provides a broad range of services and can identify when a referral to a specialist may be appropriate.
At Sandgate Family Dental, our general dentistry services include:
- Dental check-ups and cleans — thorough examinations and professional cleaning to maintain oral health
- Dental fillings — repairing teeth affected by decay, wear or minor damage
- Preventive treatments — fluoride application, fissure sealants and personalised hygiene advice
- Gum health assessments — monitoring for early signs of gum disease
- Cracked or chipped tooth repair — restoring the strength and appearance of damaged teeth
- Emergency dental care — prompt attention for toothaches, broken teeth and other urgent concerns
- Referrals — for root canal treatment, wisdom teeth removal, dental crowns or other specialist care when needed
General dentistry is the foundation of long-term oral health. By attending regular appointments and addressing concerns early, you give yourself the best opportunity to keep your natural teeth healthy and functional for as long as possible.
Dental Check-Ups and Cleans in Sandgate
A routine dental check-up is one of the most straightforward and effective ways to look after your teeth and gums. During a check-up at Sandgate Family Dental, your dentist will carefully examine your teeth, gums and soft tissues, looking for early signs of decay, gum disease, cracks, wear and other concerns that may not yet be causing symptoms.
A professional clean — sometimes called a scale and clean — is usually carried out at the same appointment. Even with consistent brushing and flossing at home, plaque and tartar tend to build up in areas that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush, particularly behind the lower front teeth, along the gum line and between closely spaced teeth. A professional clean helps remove this build-up and may help reduce the risk of cavities and gum inflammation over time.
Depending on your situation, your dentist may also recommend dental X-rays to check for issues beneath the surface, such as decay between teeth, bone loss or impacted teeth.
How often should I have a dental check-up?
Most patients benefit from a check-up and clean every six months. However, some patients may need more frequent visits — for example, if they are managing gum disease, are at higher risk of decay, or are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Your dentist will recommend a schedule that suits your individual needs.
It’s been a long time since my last visit — is that okay?
Absolutely. We regularly welcome patients who haven’t been to the dentist in years. There’s no judgement and no lecture — just a thorough, honest assessment and a clear plan to help you get back on track at a pace that works for you.
Preventive Dental Care
Prevention is at the core of general dentistry. Identifying and addressing concerns early — or helping to prevent them from developing in the first place — can reduce the need for more complex and costly treatment later on.
Our preventive dental care services include:
Fluoride treatments. A concentrated fluoride application can help strengthen tooth enamel and may assist in protecting against decay. This is particularly beneficial for children, patients with a history of cavities, or those with dry mouth.
Fissure sealants. The deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth can trap food and bacteria, making them more susceptible to decay. A fissure sealant is a thin protective coating applied to these grooves to help reduce that risk. Sealants are commonly recommended for children once their adult molars come through, but can also benefit adults.
Gum care and hygiene advice. Your dentist and hygienist can provide personalised guidance on brushing technique, flossing, interdental cleaning, and diet — all of which play an important role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums between visits.
Mouthguards. For patients involved in contact sports or high-impact physical activities, a custom-fitted sports mouthguard offers significantly better protection than a generic store-bought alternative. We also provide custom nightguards for patients who grind or clench their teeth during sleep (bruxism), which can help reduce wear, jaw pain and headaches over time.
Fillings and Everyday Dental Treatments
If your dentist identifies a cavity or area of decay during a check-up, a dental filling is often the most straightforward treatment to restore the tooth. At Sandgate Family Dental, we use tooth-coloured composite resin materials that are designed to match the shade of your natural teeth, so the repair blends in and looks natural.
Fillings are also used to repair teeth that have been chipped, cracked or worn down over time. Where an older filling has deteriorated or is no longer providing adequate protection, your dentist may recommend replacing it.
When is a filling not enough?
In some cases, the damage or decay affecting a tooth may be too extensive for a standard filling to restore reliably. Your dentist will let you know if an alternative treatment may be more appropriate, such as:
- A dental crown — a custom-made cap that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth to restore its strength and shape
- Root canal treatment — if decay or infection has reached the inner pulp of the tooth
- An extraction — if the tooth cannot be saved, followed by options such as a dental bridge, denture or dental implant to replace it
Your dentist will always explain the available options, what each involves, and the likely costs, so you can make an informed decision.
When Should You See a Dentist?
Regular six-monthly check-ups are the best way to stay on top of your oral health. But there are times when you should book an appointment sooner rather than waiting for your next routine visit.
Consider seeing a dentist if you notice:
- A toothache or lingering tooth pain that doesn’t settle
- Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks
- Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- A chipped, cracked or broken tooth
- A loose filling or crown
- Persistent bad breath that doesn’t improve with brushing
- Swelling or soreness in your mouth, jaw or face
- Difficulty or discomfort when chewing
- Sores or ulcers in your mouth that aren’t healing
Many dental conditions develop gradually and may not cause obvious pain in the early stages. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s always worth having it checked. Early treatment is generally simpler, less invasive and less costly than waiting until a problem becomes more advanced.
If you’re experiencing a dental emergency such as a knocked-out tooth, severe pain or significant swelling, contact us as soon as possible. We offer emergency dental appointments and will do our best to see you promptly.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Whether it’s your first visit to Sandgate Family Dental or your first dental appointment in a long time, knowing what to expect can help ease any nerves.
Before your appointment
If you’re a new patient, you’ll be asked to complete a brief medical history form. It’s helpful to bring along your health fund card (if applicable) and a list of any medications you’re currently taking.
When you arrive
Our reception team will welcome you and make sure you’re comfortable. If you have any concerns or anxieties, please let us know — we can take things at your pace.
Your examination
Your dentist will take time to discuss your dental history, any current symptoms or concerns, and what you’d like to achieve. They’ll then carry out a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and soft tissues. X-rays may be recommended if needed.
After your examination
Your dentist will explain their findings in plain, straightforward language. If any treatment is recommended, they’ll walk you through the options, what’s involved, the expected timeframe, and an estimate of costs — before anything is started. You’ll never be pressured into a treatment you’re not comfortable with.
Your clean
If a professional clean is part of your visit, this is usually completed on the same day. Your dentist or hygienist may also offer guidance on home care techniques to help you get the most out of your daily brushing and flossing routine.
We want you to leave every appointment feeling informed, cared for and confident about the next step — whether that’s scheduling your next routine visit or beginning a course of treatment.
General Dentistry for Families
Sandgate Family Dental is a family-friendly practice, and we welcome patients of all ages — from toddlers having their very first dental visit through to grandparents managing long-term dental health.
Bringing the whole family to the same dental practice can make life simpler. You can book back-to-back appointments, build an ongoing relationship with a dental team who knows your family’s history, and help your children become comfortable with the dentist from an early age.
Children’s dental care. We understand that little ones can feel nervous or uncertain at the dentist. Our team takes a patient, gentle approach with young children — building trust gradually and making visits a positive experience. For eligible families, we accept the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which provides bulk-billed dental services for children aged 0–17. Find out more on our children’s dentistry page.
Teens and adults. From wisdom tooth monitoring and orthodontic assessments to ongoing preventive care, we provide the full range of general dental services for patients at every stage of life.
Older adults. As we age, our dental needs change. Dry mouth, receding gums, worn fillings and root decay become more common. Regular check-ups allow your dentist to monitor these changes and adjust your care plan as needed.
Health Funds, HICAPS and Payment Options
We believe that cost shouldn’t be a barrier to looking after your teeth. At Sandgate Family Dental, we aim to make dental care accessible and transparent.
Health fund preferred provider. We are a preferred provider with several major health funds, which may help reduce your out-of-pocket costs. These include CBHS, HCF, nib, HIF and Smile.com.au. Visit our health funds page for full details.
HICAPS on-site claiming. We offer HICAPS facilities so you can claim your health fund rebate on the spot and only pay the gap amount at the time of your appointment. There’s no need to submit a separate claim later.
Transparent pricing. Before any treatment begins, your dentist will provide you with a clear estimate of costs. If a treatment plan involves multiple appointments, we’ll outline the expected costs for each stage so there are no surprises.
No health fund? That’s not a problem. Our team can discuss payment options with you and help you prioritise treatment based on your needs and budget.
