What each is
What each type of mouthguard actually is
A custom mouthguard is made from a digital scan or physical impression of your teeth. The guard is fabricated in a dental lab from layered, pressure-laminated material, then trimmed and finished to your bite. Each guard is unique to the person it is made for.
A boil-and-bite mouthguard is a generic, pre-formed shell of softer thermoplastic. You drop it into hot water to soften it, then bite down to mould it roughly to the shape of your top teeth. You can find boil-and-bite guards at most sports stores and pharmacies for a low cost.

How they compare on the things that matter
Fit
A custom guard is built to the contours of your teeth, gums, and bite, so it sits snugly without you needing to clench to keep it in place. A boil-and-bite takes a rough impression of the front teeth only, and the back of the guard usually does not hug the molars closely. A guard that has to be held in place by biting is a guard that comes loose when you talk, drink, or take a hard impact — exactly the moments when it needs to stay put.
Comfort
Most patients tell us a well-fitted custom guard feels noticeably less bulky than a boil-and-bite. Because the material is thinner and contoured, it sits flush against the teeth rather than sitting on top of them. Boil-and-bite guards can be comfortable enough for short sessions, but they often feel too thick, too soft, or too loose over longer matches.
Breathing and speaking
A custom guard does not block the airway or sit between the lips and teeth in a way that interferes with breathing. Most players can speak normally with one in. With a bulkier boil-and-bite, breathing through the mouth can feel restricted and speech is often muffled. Many players end up taking the guard out between plays — which removes the protection at the worst possible moment.
Protection and durability
Custom guards are made from layers of pressure-laminated EVA. The material is denser and more impact-absorbent than boil-and-bite stock. The guard also covers the back teeth more reliably, where most bite-related forces travel during impact. Custom guards typically last a full season or longer for adults; boil-and-bite guards wear faster and distort with repeated heat exposure.

Who should consider a custom mouthguard
You may benefit from a custom guard if you or your child plays contact football codes, combat sports, hockey, cricket, or any stick-and-ball sport. The most common candidates are players in contact football codes, combat sports, stick-and-ball sports, and water sports. What to expect at the appointment
A custom mouthguard appointment is straightforward — one scan visit, a short return visit to fit.
Scan or impression
We take a digital scan or quick impression of the upper teeth (and sometimes the lower as well, depending on the bite). The scan goes to the lab for fabrication.
Fabrication
The lab builds the guard from layered EVA. You can pick colours, add team designs, or include initials.
Fitting
You come back to collect it and check the fit. We make any minor adjustments at the fitting visit so it feels comfortable for play.

Payment
Health funds and payment
We are a HICAPS provider, so where your private health fund includes mouthguard cover under preventive or general dental, we can process your rebate at the practice and you only pay the gap. Rebates depend on your individual policy and annual limits — your fund can confirm what is covered before treatment.

Custom vs boil-and-bite FAQs
Is a boil-and-bite mouthguard better than nothing?
Yes. Any properly fitted guard offers more protection than no guard. The trade-off is fit, comfort, and durability, all of which favour a custom guard for ongoing or competitive play.
Can I just keep reheating a boil-and-bite guard to refit it?
Repeated heating tends to thin and distort the material, which reduces the protective layer over the teeth. Once a boil-and-bite is worn or warped, it should be replaced rather than reformed.
How long does a custom mouthguard last?
For adults playing regular contact sport, a custom guard generally lasts a season or more. Children and teenagers need their guards refitted more often because the jaw and teeth are still changing — see junior sport mouthguards.
Can a custom guard be made if I have braces?
Yes. We use a slightly different design that accommodates the brackets and allows for tooth movement. See mouthguards with braces.
How quickly can I get a custom mouthguard?
From the scan to collection, most custom guards are ready within one to two weeks. If you are mid-season and a guard has just broken, let us know and we will do our best to fast-track it.
Do custom mouthguards come in different colours?
Most labs offer single colours, two-colour combinations, and team designs. You can choose at the scan appointment.
Will my health fund cover a custom mouthguard?
