A Tour of Sandgate Family Dental

If you have not been to our practice before, this page is the next best thing to walking through the door. We have set things up to be calm and family-friendly — a warm reception, comfortable surgeries, modern equipment, and a few thoughtful touches for the kids. Our aim is a practice that feels welcoming rather than clinical.

If you would like to book, head to our online booking page or phone the practice during business hours.

Where we are

Sandgate Family Dental is on Brisbane’s northside, in the bayside suburb of Sandgate. We look after families and individuals from Sandgate, Brighton, Shorncliffe, Bracken Ridge, Deagon, Boondall, Taigum, Fitzgibbon, Clontarf, Margate, and Woody Point. Sandgate train station is a short walk from the practice, and there is on-street parking nearby.

Stepping inside

The first thing most patients comment on is the feel of the place. The reception area is calm rather than clinical — natural light, comfortable seating, and a few quieter corners. Our front-desk team is the first face you meet, and they handle bookings, paperwork, and health-fund claims at the counter.

If you have any access needs or anything you would like us to know before you head through, just let reception know on arrival. Our accessibility page covers what we offer and how to flag needs in advance.

Our reception and waiting area

The waiting area is set up so families do not feel cramped. There is space for parents with prams, room for older children to sit comfortably, and a quieter section for patients who prefer not to be in the middle of things. We try to keep the wait minimal — our scheduling is built around running close to time, so most patients are called through within a few minutes of their appointment.

You will also find:

  • Hand sanitiser and disposable masks at the entry
  • Water and quiet music
  • A small reading nook for kids
  • Power outlets for charging your phone if you need them

Our surgeries

The treatment rooms — what we call surgeries — are the heart of the practice. Each surgery is set up the same way so any of our dentists can step in and pick up where another has left off. That matters for continuity of care, and it also means you do not have to repeat your whole story every visit.

What you will find in each surgery:

  • A modern reclining dental chair with adjustable headrest and lighting
  • A monitor we use to show photos, X-rays, and treatment plans on screen
  • An intraoral camera so you can see what we see
  • Digital X-ray equipment with low-dose imaging
  • Sealed, autoclave-sterilised instrument packs opened in front of you
  • Disposable coverings on touch points, refreshed between every patient
  • Plenty of natural light where it is available

If you would like to know more about how we run our sterilisation and infection control, see our sterilisation and infection control page.

Our technology

We have invested in equipment that makes appointments more accurate, more comfortable, and faster.

Digital X-rays

We use digital sensors rather than traditional film. The dose is lower, the image comes up on screen within seconds, and we can show you exactly what we are looking at. See our digital imaging page for more.

Intraoral camera

A small pen-shaped camera that takes high-resolution photos inside the mouth. Most patients find it genuinely helpful to see what we are talking about, especially for cracks, old fillings, and gum changes.

Digital scanning

For dentures, crowns, and clear aligner planning we use digital intraoral scanning rather than traditional impressions where possible. There is no tray, no setting time, and you can pause whenever needed — particularly useful for patients with a sensitive gag reflex.

Modern handpieces and ultrasonic scalers

Quieter, smoother instruments make cleans and fillings more comfortable than they used to be. We are continually updating equipment in line with best practice.

Kids in the practice

We see plenty of families, and we have set things up so the kids feel at ease.

  • A welcoming reception team who chat with children at their level
  • Time to settle in before treatment starts
  • Books, screens, and the option of sunglasses against the light
  • “Knee-to-knee” examinations for very young children, with parent and child together in the chair
  • Calm, clear language — no “needles”, no “drills”
  • Easy back-to-back appointments for siblings or family groups

For more on what to expect at a child’s first appointment, see our page on your child’s first dental visit.

Comfort touches for anxious patients

For patients who find dental visits hard, a few small things often make a real difference:

  • Longer appointment slots booked in advance
  • A clear “stop signal” agreed before we start
  • Step-by-step explanations of what is happening
  • Headphones with your own music or a podcast
  • Sunglasses to dim the overhead light
  • Breaks whenever you need them

Our pages on dental anxiety and managing a strong gag reflex go into more detail.

Parking and getting here

There is on-street parking around the practice. If you have a Mobility Parking Permit and would like advice on the closest spots, please give us a quick call before your appointment. Sandgate train station is a short walk away, and the area is well served by bus routes from the surrounding suburbs.

Behind the scenes

Beyond the surgeries you visit, the practice runs a few areas you do not normally see — but that matter for how appointments work:

  • A dedicated sterilisation room where every instrument is reprocessed
  • A clean storage area for sealed, ready-to-use instrument packs
  • A staff area where the team plans and reviews complex cases together
  • Computer systems that hold your records securely and let any of our dentists pick up your file

Meet our team

Our dentists — including Dr Nina and Dr Nima — work alongside experienced dental assistants and a friendly front-desk team. You can read more about each of us on our team page.
